Food has always played a huge role in my life. In my family, the kitchen was the center of the household. Regardless of our financial situation or time of day food was always readily available. It was always taught in our family that a fresh homemade meal will always beat any food that could be bought elsewhere. Canned food was also very limited. Everything was usually bought early in the morning, daily, from the aunties and uncles at the vast amount of food stalls in Chinatown. It never dawned on me how lucky I was to have access to such fresh produce footsteps outside of my home.

Most of my fondest memories as a child usually if not all involve food one way or another. Those were some of the happiest times in my life. Food was one of the few things that always piqued my curiosity, and fascinated me. As a young child, my grandma was the main person responsible for taking care of me. I would usually follow her around in the kitchen as she whipped up something delicious to eat. One of my favorite items, simple but tasty, chinese sausage fried rice. Five ingredients, rice, Chinese sausage, egg, and soy sauce, that was all. With my grandma, less was more. If done with the proper technique, and love, that’s all you needed.
